Um dos pioneiros do gênero rock progressivo. O primeiro ensaio oficial da banda foi em 13 de janeiro de 1969. O primeiro line-up compôs o guitarrista Robert Fripp, lyricist e homem de iluminação Peter Sinfield (que "inventou" o nome da banda), compositor e multi-instrumentalista Ian McDonald, baixista e vocalista Greg Lake, e baterista Michael Giles. Eles excursionaram extensivamente e lançaram o álbum In The Court Of The Crimson King (An Observation By King Crimson), uma peça seminal de música dos anos 60. Pouco depois, a banda se dividiu para reformar novamente sofrendo mudanças contínuas de pessoal por um período de dois anos e meio (antes 1970-meados de 1972), lançando mais três álbuns de estúdio e um gravado ao vivo, com Robert Fripp como o único membro restante.

O novo Rei Crimson que evoluiu em julho de 1972 (com o ex-baterista Sim Bill Bruford, ex-Family (6) e mais tarde Ásia (2) baixista / vocalista John Wetton e outros membros mais transitórios) marcou uma volta para um som progressivo mais pesado, com overtones experimentais e de fusão, culminando em performances ao vivo semi-improvisatórios únicas. Esta linha central continuou até meados de 1974, quando Fripp quebrou a banda (como ele pensava) para o bem.

Em meados de 1981, após um total de 7 anos, uma banda recém-formada incluindo Robert Fripp, com Adrian Belew em vocais e guitarra, Tony Levin no baixo e Chapman Stick, e Bill Bruford em baterias acústicas e eletrônicas, mudou seu nome de Discipline para King Crimson. Esta formação permaneceu intacta até o verão de 1984, lançando três álbuns de estúdio.

Dez anos mais tarde (maio de 1994), King Crimson começou a ensaiar novamente, desta vez como um "trio duplo", incluindo Pat Mastelotto em bateria e percussão e Trey Gunn em Stick, além do line-up da década de 1980; lançou dois álbuns completos e um punhado de EPs através do próprio Discipline Global Mobile label de Fripp. Um processo de “fratalização” levou à criação de vários grupos de spin-off contendo três ou quatro membros do King Crimson, apelidados de ProjeKcts One, Two, Three, Four e X, que lançaram sessões ao vivo e de estúdio através da DGM. Tendo recuperado os direitos do catálogo completo de King Crimson, a DGM expôs várias outras gravações de todos os períodos da existência da banda, incluindo lançamentos bi-mesnais "King Crimson Collectors' Club" disponíveis apenas para membros do site da gravadora. Nas mãos da DGM, o catálogo de costas King Crimson (com a maioria das adições disponíveis apenas no formato FLAC/MP3 em vez de no CD) cresceu enormemente, tornando-se um dos maiores para qualquer grupo de rock de sempre.

A próxima reencarnação da banda, jokingly apelidado de "duplo duo", omitiu Bill Bruford e Tony Levin. Seu primeiro álbum completo de estúdio foi “The ConstruKction of Light” (maio de 2000), e a formação continuou até o final de 2003. Desde então, Tony Levin voltou ao grupo e Trey Gunn partiu. Em 2008, com a adição de Gavin Harrison, o novo Rei Crimson começou e realizou uma 40th Anniversary Tour.

Robert Fripp afirmou em uma entrevista de agosto de 2012 que ele havia se aposentado do negócio da música, mas 2014 encontrou uma nova turnê King Crimson, incluindo Fripp (guitarra), Mel Collins (saxofones, flauta), Tony Levin (basses, stick), Pat Mastelotto (bateria, percussão), Gavin Harrison (bateria, percussão), Jakko M. Jakszyk (vocais, guitarra, flauta) e William Rieflin (bateria, percussão, sintetizador.) Em 2016, Jeremy Stacey (bateria, teclados) se juntou como oitavo membro fazendo do grupo um "quarteto duplo".
